History

The history of the inhabitants of these lands stems back millennia. With the oldest know golden jewelry found dating back to the Neolithic era (some 6ooo years ago). The strategic geographic location as a key land route from Europe to Middle East and Asia means that many battles where fought over these lands. 

Inhabited by the Thracians for thousands of years, with famous Thracians such as Spartacus, the lands of present day Bulgaria fell under Roman rule in the 1st century BC. Later a migration of Slavic tribes settled in the region, merging with the incoming Bulgars, a Central Asian tribe in the late 7th century. Prolonged periods of conflict with the Byzantine Empire and ended with the onset of the Ottoman Turks that would rule over these lands from the 14th century until Bulgaria attained autonomy in 1878. As part of the loosing sides in both world wars, Bulgaria came under the sphere of influence of the Soviet Union, becoming a people’s republic until the 1990, when the first multiparty election was held since the end of the Second World War. Now a member of both NATO (2004) and the EU (2007) Bulgaria is developing into a modern country and part of the European community.
